Revolutionizing Cocoa Production in Uganda
OUR FOCUS AREA
Enhancing Cocoa Bean Quality
Training Area
This facility will provide farmers hands-on education in modern cocoa farming techniques, sustainable practices, and advanced post-harvest handling methods.
The goal is to elevate bean quality to meet international standards, allowing farmers to access premium markets and improve their income.
Fermentation Center
Equipped with state-of-the-art fermentation boxes, this center replaces the inconsistent, traditional methods often used by farmers.
By standardizing the fermentation process, the center ensures consistent bean quality and flavor, addressing current issues of variability and enhancing the beans’ appeal to international buyers.
Drying Center
Utilizing raised beds for sun drying, this center offers a significant improvement over traditional ground-level drying methods, which often result in uneven drying and quality issues.
The raised beds ensure beans are dried uniformly to the optimal moisture content, preventing mold growth and maintaining bean quality, making them market-ready.
Entities in Cocoa Supply Chain Governance
The Bubwa Farmers Outgrower Association is transitioning into a cooperative to provide a governance framework for the Farm Service Centers. The cooperative will manage the centers, promote sustainable practices, and improve market access, thereby enhancing
coordination within the cocoa supply chain.
Driving Industry Growth and Sustainability through Innovation
The innovative Farm Service Centers of Bubwa Cocoa Estates are redefining post-harvest handling in Uganda by moving away from traditional, rudimentary methods to modern, efficient practices. With committed off-takers in Abu Dhabi purchasing 500 metric tonnes per month, this initiative is poised to drive industry growth and sustainability.
Furthermore, it sets the stage for the next phase of value addition, with plans to produce cocoa powder and cocoa butter for international markets, including those already secured.
